HCS Case Study 4 - Royal Shrewsbury Hospital

CHP and Boiler during installation

RSH is a 424 bed Medium Acute hospital, comprising a range of mainly inefficient buildings from 1090’s to more recent developments.  HCS developed this project through free Carbon Trust Studies and a Community Energy Programme (CEP) Development grant.  A CEP 24%  Capital Grant of £ 547 K was obtained towards the cost of a major Energy Systems Infrastructure upgrading project including: new steam boilers, 1 MW CHP. absorption cooling, BEMS replacement and extensive LTHW and CHW distribution systems.

The scheme was delivered through a fully funded Performance Contract with off balance sheet benefits and a net annual cash release of £ 780 K

Key Benefits

DOH Primary 15% saving target achieved in one turnkey installation

£780,000 savings per annum guaranteed for 15 years

No NHS capital or increase in revenue required

Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust are now developing a further contract at Princess Royal Hospital, using a combination of NHS Grant and Supplier Finance, managed by HCS. This follows years of involvement by HCS at PRH, firstly with the installation of a gas turbine in the early 90's and conversion from coal in the late 90's - all using PPP capital
